What is a hand fat transfer?

Over time, the skin on our hands tends to lose elasticity and volume. As a result, our veins and tendons become more visible, and our hands develop a bonier, aged appearance. A hand fat transfer, also known as a hand rejuvenation procedure, is a cosmetic surgery technique that is designed to hide noticeably aged hands by rejuvenating the skin. Like other fat grafting treatments, the procedure involves taking fat from one area of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and transferring it into the hands to restore lost volume and improve their appearance.

Who is an ideal candidate for a hand fat transfer?

Hand fat transfer procedures are one of the simplest and most effective techniques for improving the look of one’s hands. This procedure is designed to increase volume in the hands, reversing the process of collagen loss that takes place over many years. The vast majority of middle-aged and older patients are considered to be good candidates for a hand fat transfer.

While a hand fat transfer is by no means considered to be a major surgery, it is highly recommended that patients be in good general health before undergoing the treatment. The patient will need to have at least one donor site on their body with enough fat cells that can be harvested and transferred into the hands. This usually isn’t an issue for most patients.

Patients can learn more about candidacy by setting up a consultation with our office.

What are the benefits of a hand fat transfer?

Hand fat transfer procedures are loved by patients for various reasons. Some of these include:

  • Reversal of fat loss in the hands using the patient’s own fat
  • A lower risk of rejection, as the fat comes from the patient’s own body
  • A quick and simple treatment that can be performed in as little as 20 minutes
  • The results last for years
  • Wrinkles, folds, and other signs of aging can all be addressed
  • Visible veins, tendons, and bones can all be dealt with
  • The hands become soft and supple again
  • The results are more natural in comparison to dermal fillers
  • The procedure can be performed in tandem with other fat transfer procedures (such as for the face) for a comprehensive rejuvenation treatment

What do hand fat transfer procedures treat?

Hand Fat Transfers are performed primarily to address cosmetic concerns, giving patients the ability to restore their hands to the way they looked when they were in their younger years. Beyond the aesthetic benefits, some patients also notice health benefits, such as their hands feeling stronger, their joints and knuckles no longer aching, and their hands having a smoother feel to them.

What does the treatment entail?

Hand fat transfers are a simple and straightforward procedure that consists of the following steps:

  • First, healthy fat is harvested from the belly, thighs, or buttocks by way of liposuction.
  • The harvested fat is then processed through a small puncture in the wrist and prepared for transfer.
  • A fine needle and cannula are used to inject the healthy fat into areas of the hand that have lost volume and vitality.
  • To account for the natural reabsorption of the injected fat, more fat than required is injected. This ensures that the hands will continue to look great even after some fat has been absorbed by the body.
  • The hand is then massaged to ensure an even distribution of the fat, achieving the desired outcome and leaving the hands looking healthier and more youthful.
  • Many patients report a significant reduction in the appearance of aging hands, with some seeing a difference of up to 10 to 20 years following the procedure.

The procedure is performed awake with no need for general anesthesia.

Fat transfer recovery

After undergoing a hand fat transfer, you may experience slight redness, discomfort, and bruising at the injection points. Your hands may also appear puffy or swollen. However, these side effects typically subside quickly, and there is minimal downtime.

To alleviate these side effects, you can use ice packs or cold compresses. However, be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as this can cause the fat to shift unnaturally. It's normal for some of these side effects to last for seven to ten days. There are no visible scars left after the healing process has completed.
